Documents Required For IELTS

  • The primary document needed for registration is a passport.
  • When registering for the exam, this distinct passport ID is utilised.
  • Students must also have one colored photocopy on the day of exam.
  • For students below 18, a consent form for minors is also required.

IELTS Process

  • The first step is to register for the IELTS exam. You can do this online through the official IELTS website or in person at an authorized test center. Ensure you have a valid identification document and a recent passport-sized photograph.
  • There are two types of IELTS tests: Academic and General Training. Choose the test type that aligns with your goals. Academic IELTS is typically for those applying to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, while General Training IELTS is for immigration purposes or professional registration.
  • Once registered, select your preferred test date and location. IELTS exams are conducted multiple times a month at various test centers across India, so you have flexibility in scheduling your exam.
  • Pay the required exam fee. The fee varies depending on the test location and type.
  • After completing registration and payment, you'll receive a confirmation email with details regarding your test date, location, and instructions for the exam day.
  • Familiarize yourself with the test format and content. Practice with sample questions and take mock tests to assess your readiness.
  • On the day of the exam, present your identification document to the test center staff for verification. The IELTS exam consists of four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, and typically lasts around 2 hours and 45 minutes.
  • The Listening and Reading sections are conducted first. These sections involve listening to recordings and reading passages, followed by answering questions based on what you heard or read.
  • After a short break, you'll complete the Writing section. This involves writing essays or reports based on given prompts or tasks.
  • The final section is the Speaking test, conducted separately from the other sections. You'll have a face-to-face conversation with an examiner, discussing various topics and responding to questions.
  • IELTS results are usually available online 13 calendar days after the test date. You'll receive a Test Report Form (TRF) containing your scores for each section (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking), as well as your overall band score.
  • IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test date.

Types of Tests in IELTS

There are 4 tests included in IELTS.

Listening

In the Listening test, candidates listen to recordings of native English speakers and answer a series of questions. The recordings include a range of accents and topics, covering conversations, monologues, and discussions. Candidates are assessed on their ability to understand the main ideas, specific details, opinions, and attitudes conveyed in the recordings.

Reading

The Reading test assesses candidates’ reading comprehension skills. Candidates read a variety of texts, including passages from newspapers, magazines, journals, and academic texts. The passages cover a range of topics and may include diagrams, charts, or graphs. Candidates answer multiple-choice, matching, and short-answer questions to demonstrate their ability to comprehend, infer, and analyze information from the texts.

Writing

The Writing test comprises two tasks: Task 1 and Task 2. In Task 1, candidates are required to describe, summarize, or explain visual information, such as graphs, charts, or diagrams. In Task 2, candidates write an essay in response to a prompt or question, expressing their opinions, arguments, or solutions to a given issue. Candidates are assessed on their ability to organize ideas, develop arguments, use appropriate language and grammar, and maintain coherence and cohesion in their writing.

Speaking

The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with a certified IELTS examiner. The test consists of three parts: Part 1 (Introduction and Interview), Part 2 (Long Turn), and Part 3 (Discussion). In Part 1, candidates answer questions about themselves, their hobbies, interests, and experiences. In Part 2, candidates speak for 1-2 minutes on a given topic, which they have one minute to prepare. In Part 3, candidates engage in a discussion with the examiner, responding to questions related to the topic introduced in Part 2. Candidates are assessed on their fluency, coherence, vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammatical accuracy during the Speaking test.
