Types of Tests in TOEFL

There are 4 types of tests in TOEFL

Reading

In the Reading section, test-takers are presented with 3-4 academic passages, each approximately 700 words long. The passages cover a variety of topics, such as science, history, social science, and arts. Test-takers are required to read each passage carefully and answer multiple-choice questions that assess their ability to understand main ideas, details, vocabulary, and rhetorical purposes. They must also demonstrate their ability to understand the organization and structure of the text, make inferences, and understand the author’s attitude or opinion.

Listening

The Listening section consists of 4-6 academic lectures and 2-3 conversations. Test-takers listen to audio recordings of these lectures and conversations, which vary in length and complexity. During the listening exercises, test-takers are required to answer questions that assess their ability to comprehend main ideas, supporting details, purpose, and speaker attitude or opinion. They must also demonstrate their ability to understand the organization and structure of the information presented, make inferences, and take notes effectively.

Speaking

The Speaking section evaluates test-takers’ ability to communicate effectively in spoken English. It consists of 4 tasks, which include expressing an opinion, summarizing information, and providing a solution to a problem. In Task 1, test-takers are asked to express an opinion on a familiar topic. In Task 2, they are required to speak based on a reading passage and a lecture. Task 3 involves summarizing information from a conversation. Task 4 requires test-takers to express an opinion on an academic-related topic. Test-takers are evaluated on their delivery, language use, and topic development.

Writing

The Writing section comprises two tasks: an Integrated Writing task and an Independent Writing task. In the Integrated Writing task, test-takers read a passage and listen to a lecture on a related topic. They are then required to summarize the main points from both sources and explain how they are connected. In the Independent Writing task, test-takers are presented with a prompt and asked to write an essay expressing their opinion or preference on the given topic. Test-takers are assessed on their ability to organize and develop ideas coherently, use appropriate language and grammar, and effectively convey their arguments or opinions.
